Mental health support

Your mental health matters.

If you are not feeling right, please speak to staff within your department who will be able to offer guidance. I am always happy to speak my students about this. Otherwise, here is list of mental health resources available to you at the University of Bristol, run by a number of groups.

Crisis support

Bristol Sanctuary: 'The Sanctuary is a comfortable, safe place to come when you feel you cannot cope. It is open to anyone who is in distress' Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights from 7pm to 2am. Triaged over the phone first, so call 0117 9542952. They will get you a taxi home.

Bristol Mental Health Crisis support: 'If you or someone you are with is in crisis, please call the crisis line – 0300 555 0334 – to speak to dedicated clinical staff who will deliver compassionate and effective support. This line is open 24 hours a day, every day.'

General UoB

Information on extenuating circumstances. You may also be able to obtain an extension for coursework with a good reason, including mental health matters. The Student Union can provide advice on these things through the Just Ask service:  bristolsu-justask@bristol.ac.uk or 0117 331 8634.

Counselling

UoB student counselling service: if you are unable to register for individual sessions, there are a number of other resources available to you including group support sessions for things like bipolar support and mindfullness

UoB counselling services for international students

Off the Record: a local counselling service for young people

Bristol Mind: paid-for counselling can be accessed through Bristol Mind. £15-£30 per session ('In the event of financial hardship consideration to what would be an affordable fee can be discussed'), with an initial assessment required.

You can also search for counsellors and psychotherapists using this website. Filter by cost, location and sex of counsellor; some charge £25 per session.

Womankind: offers free and low-cost counselling for women, especially women facing domestic abuse (call on 0117 9166461). They also have a helpline (call on 0345 4582914)

Peer-to-peer student support

UoB Peace of Mind Society: focusing on mental health, PoM is a community of students that meet in person and support each other online

UoB Survivors Network: peer-to-peer support for survivors of sexual assault

Bristol Nightline: 'Nightline is the Bristol University information and listening service run by students, for students. Open from 8pm til 8am every day in term time. Tel: 0117 9266 266'

Online support

Big White Wall: 'A safe online community of people who are anxious, down or not coping who support and help each other by sharing what’s troubling them, guided by trained professionals.' Anonymous and available 24/7, just register using the university option and your UoB email address.
